Al and Helen opened Auto Repairs Houhora in 2020, but the history of the business goes a lot further back.

Al started his apprenticeship in 1972 at the Maori Trade Training Schemes. He worked at various workshops until 1988, when he felt he had gained enough experience to open his own workshop, and run it the high standard of workmanship he expected. So in 1988, Al’s Mechanical Repairs was established, right here in Houhora, where we stayed for 9 years before moving to Auckland in 1997.

Over the years, In response to growing customer demand, Al decided to open more workshops, using the strategies he had developed to ensure quality workmanship every time.

In 1997, Auto Repairs Massey was established, and is still going strong.

In 2001, Auto Repairs Te Atatu opened its doors for the first time.

And in 2020, Al and Helen came back to where it all started to open Auto Repairs Houhora.

Al and Helen take great pride in the success they have found with their family business, and it really is a family business, as all four of their kids have worked in the business, and two have stuck around to make us into an intergenerational workshop.

Al won’t just replace things that can be used for a while more…earning quick money like that does not interest him. it’s quite rare these days.
